Synopsis
Vampires are breeding in vaults deep beneath the Whitehouse, systematically invading the bodies of high ranking officials in their quest for power. Their objective is to convert the president of the United States into a vampire to achieve control of the government, but for some reason he is immune to their influence.
Gabriel Adalwolf, the archangel of vampires, is summoned from his earthly grave to break the president’s resistance to the change, but before he can awake from his thousand years sleep, his tomb is discovered by a group of vampire hunters. A gold encrusted spear is driven into his heart and his wings are sawn off. His body is then bound in gold shards, weighted with lead and thrown into the sea.
A fishing boat dredging the ocean bed ensnares the body, which is hauled to the surface and handed over to the authorities. An autopsy reveals that the body has a second heart conjoined with the heart that was decimated by the spear, together with two bony stumps protruding from its shoulder blades. FBI agent Joel Ronyan is brought in to investigate the case, and together with anthropologist Kate Dorigen, tries to determine how such a miscreation could have existed and who killed it, but the autopsy’s findings are inconclusive. The case is closed, and Gabriel’s body is buried unceremoniously in a city grave.
Joel is not convinced. Too many questions remain unanswered, and when an unusual homicide call takes him back to the grave, he finds an empty coffin and a mutilated corpse nearby, a parchment effigy that has been completely drained of blood.
The city becomes a bloodbath of identical killings, creating hysteria which threatens to spiral out of control, but which leads Joel to the vampire hunters who killed Gabriel.
Led by billionaire Lucius Absolon, they convince him of the existence of vampires, and of a terrifying minefield of deception which is engulfing the nation. Lucius reveals that his brother, who is president of the largest bank in North America, is also a vampire, something he has kept close to himself in order to try and source the breeding ground.
Power hungry and like a giant waste machine, Silas Absolon has devoured the almost defunct gold market, devalued by a recession which has all but wiped out the American economy. He is ruthless in his obsession to become the vampire leader, but unknown to him, Gabriel plans to kill him once the country is under his control.
Joel stumbles into a web of deceit and treachery which takes him to the heart of the Whitehouse, while vampires masquerading as secret service agents try to silence him as he begins to unravel the truth, and he calls on Kate to join forces with himself and Lucius to try and find a way of destroying the vampires.
They become paranoid in their search, fearing that everyone they come into contact with is a vampire, and when Lucius tells them he believes the breeding ground to be in the subterranean passages below the Whitehouse, and that they can only be destroyed by fire, Joel realises that the only way he can put an end to them is by burning the warren, which will inevitably destroy the Whitehouse. His world becomes a nightmare of doubt, intensified by an innate fear of burning after watching his parents die in a hotel inferno.
Fear and confusion wreak havoc on him as he contemplates the destruction of the pinnacle of American democracy, against the absolute terror of a world controlled by vampires.
Gabriel is enraged, and tries desperately to take control of him, but Joel resists his powers as Lucius, sensing Gabriel’s presence, reconciles with his brother Silas, promising to deposit a large quantity of gold in his bank, in the hope that it will to bring him closer to Gabriel’s lair. Silas agrees, but once he enters the subterranean world, Lucius senses the nauseating smell of vampires, and discovers a secret tunnel leading from the bank to the Whitehou
